Changing Chapters

I have always Identified myself as a runner ever since i started running in 7th grade. I always thought that running was what defined me coming up through high school and even college. As I have struggled to stay healthy this past year, and had limited time for running, I started to feel that thought process change. As I have done my field experiences, that focus and how i identify myself as started to shift from runner to teacher. When I started working with the Elementary Kids this semester, it was like a switch flipped, and I was able to stop worrying about trying to live up to what i felt everyone around me expectations, that i am that runner, to being able to really focus on improving as a teacher. I feel like after this field experience I have found where I want to focus my teaching, and it is definitely on Elementary. The kids are so enthusiastic, and you are there Idol. I have always had a heart for kids, because I have grown up with kids around me all the time, but experiencing the joy and excitement that they brought everyday to class just solidified how much I want to teach Elementary.

Feeling Smart

A lot of times when you are taking a class, you think to yourself, why is this important or when will i ever use it. I have felt that way sometimes in anatomy, but something pretty cool happened to me this week. I found out Monday night that my grandma is having surgery this week to have a pace maker put in. When I called my mom and asked what was wrong, she said she wasn't really sure what the doctor was talking about but said it had something to do with the electrical system of the heart. Well sure enough we have just finished the heart in anatomy so i knew the systems and chambers like the back of my hand. It was pretty cool to be able to educate my family on what exactly was going on inside my grandmas heart and what part wasn't working correctly to regulate her heart beat. Not only did I feel extremely smart afterwards, but it made me realize that you never know when you will get the chance to do your job as a teacher and educate someone. It was just cool that this time it happened to be my family that I got to educate.

The Fog

Have you ever felt like you head is just filled with a thick dense fog, that you cannot seem to navigate to keep track of your own thoughts. That is how I have felt this past semester. Coming into this semester, knowing that i had 3 of my most time consuming and work extensive classes, made me feel like this was going to be a long one. To my surprise, the complete opposite thing was true. This semester went by in a blur. Having so much work, and trying to learn so many of my students names in field put my brain on overload. I have never been one to have to write things down to keep them straight, but i knew that if I didnt write everything down this semester i was done for. The semester started out fine, but as we got into the heavy part of the semester, I felt like my brain shut off. It seemed that I had 10,000 things to do all of the time, and being a procrastinator, that is never a good thing. Through hard work and the best time management i have ever been able to manage in my life, i have put myself in a position now that if i can hang on for this next 2 weeks, and not bomb all of my finals, i have a shot for another 4.0 semester. Coming into this semester, I thought there was no way that was going to happen. If this semester has taught me anything, it is the importance of time management, and also that i am capable of excelling, even when I feel like my back is continually against the wall. The end of this semester will be by far the biggest relief of my college career.
